The following is about Maper Diocese:
About Maper
Maper is a recently
proposed diocese of Pakam in the Northern part of Rumbek town, the capital city
of Lakes State in Southern
Sudan. Maper County has a more than 45,000 Christians of the total
50,000 of the population.
Pakam Wuol from the Agar
clans has presumed as uneducated and warriors people of Dinka Agar clan which
is situated in the borders of Nuer, Luach and Rek.
Pakam has quickly
recently received the Christianity than others tribes in Sudan who were witnessing or heard the Gospels
since Europeans and American missionaries have come from 16 -18 centuries in Sudan.
During the time of
missionaries to Sudan,
Pakam was very rarely to be heard by the missionaries. As Dinka Agar was a very
scared tribe among Dinkas, because of their suspiciousness about slavery which
was a core problem in Sudan
special south. However, the Catholic Missionaries who first came to Dinka land
in 18th century were regret to reside in Agar. In 19th
century, the Anglican Missionaries were successfully Christianized the
Dinka but nevertheless, they were not successfully in Dinka Agar.
After the success of
Archdeacon Archibald Shaw in Dinka bor in the Upper Nile Region in 1938,
Leonard Sharland who accompany by new recruited missionary, Rev. John Collinson
visited Rumbek. Akot was become the station for the Missionaries in Agar land
for the first time since the first foot missionaries in Dinka land. As the
missionaries had found Dinka Agar was very tough and rigidity in their culture
among Dinkas, thus they were not simply accepting whatever inception that came
with these foreigners. Therefore, the missionaries didn't even think of Pakam
in the faraway distance from Akot at the eastern of Rumbek while Pakam at
the north in the Nuer border. From 1998-2001 Pakam has
enormously responded to the Good News in the extend where they had abandoned
their local gods and everyone has to carry along with the Christ's Cross as
their protector.
Pakam was counted to the
Diocese of Chuibet in the western of Rumbek under Rt. Rev. Bishop Ruben
Machier. This arrangement of moving Pakam people from North to Chueibet Diocese
in the western of Rumbek was a policy of Gabriel Roric Jur, the Bishop of
Rumbek in Khartoum
in 1997, as it was his personal interest between him and Machier.
Pakam since 1997 until
2006 has no connection with Chuibet Diocese even access to Bishop himself
however, at the end of 2006 the Christians of Pakam raised their complain after
pakam has become a county in 2005. Pakam people were concerned of three main
things: First, they have no access to Chuibet Diocese because of insecurity
between Gok and Pakam people. Second, they have no any access to Bishop whom
they could get supports and licensing to their active clergies and
laymen/laywomen, and the third, they do not have their clergies training or
bible study. So, the question is always asks, 'who we are', we are not
counted to Rumbek, the central and we not belonged to Cuibet Diocese? Location Maper is located in the Northern Rumbek city about 75 miles away from it. Maper
Diocese is comprises of many districts/Payams such as Malueth, Maper, Meen,
Alor and Wutrieng.
The population of
Christians and non-Christians is about 50,000 at the movement. When Maper was proposed to be
independent Diocese in 2006 when claim came up from the people of Northern
Rumbek County about their identity, right or privileges that would be seen in
the other Counties, after Maper has become clearly county in 2005. Pakam and Jur Bel
from Eastern of Rumbek were under the leadership of Bishop Ruben Machir, the
Bishop of Chueibet Diocese from North-West of Rumbek who was consecrated in
1997 by the Rt. Rev. Archbishop of the Anglican province in Sudan, Maruona.
The combination of these three counties was an idea of Rt. Rev. Gabriel Roric,
the Bishop of Rumbek. The reason of Bishop Roric was not clear why he had taken
Pakam to be under Machir's leadership from west of rumbek and Jur Bel from east
and the Rumbek in the central as Diocese itself!
The following section is to explain the reason why Maper became an independent Diocese and the requirements that should be met according to the primate
The reasons; why Pakam need their own Diocese First all, Maper has become a county for itself and there are the totals of 50,000 Christians. This can freed them to be independent Diocese. Second, there was ongoing conflict between Pakam and Gok. This conflict lost more than 10,000 people both side, therefore, people of Pakam has no access again to the Diocese of Chueibet even Bishop Macier himself has no access to Pakam to be able to license those who would be capable to teach the Good News to people or strength them. Third, there are lots of opportunities that Diocese can offered such as scholarship for those who have finished their academic or high school, teaching for the clergies and Evangelism, building schools, hospitals and civilisation to the people as well as others opportunities particularly educations in general. Now for example, Bishop Alapayo Manyang who is the Bishop of Rumbek, the central has more than 50 both clergies and students in the colleges in Uganda, Kenya and Sudan only within a year. These kinds of privileges and opportunities, Pakam has no that chance at all.
Requirements and conditions: As a system and regulation has been proposed by the primate and the house of Bishops of Anglican Church of Sudan in 2004 that, every county which is capable to have a Diocese must met the following requirements:
1.They have to build the Cathedral which can cost them more than $50,000 USD or more 2.The house/Bishop's residence that is going to be elected/consecrated is about $10,000 USD or more 3.$10,000 USD to be in the bank for the new Bishop to start his/her work with that budget 4.One to two cars for the Bishop which can cost $16,000 USD The primary totals would be $86,000USD After people met all these main requirements, they would be able to elect their own Bishop. And this regulation has to be applied to any county which is needed to be independent Diocese. The others seeing that this kind of system is a restriction of spreading Gospels but not because that, probably Arch-Bishop want a commitment and guarantee in his teaching. Perhaps to give the primate guarantees that these people are capable to teach the gospels.
Request: Recently after they have given these requirements, the clergies of Pakam under leadership of Archdeacon, James Matiop Malual have appealed to friends who could help them and long-term friendship in abroad but because they have not know how they could get help or make friendship, they have directed this project to me to ask any friend who could offer assistance and make relation to this new Diocese. Also they asked me to take this opportunity to work for them as they entrust me since I came to Rombek in 2005 as an only one who would be assisting them through these long run. However, my motive is that, as God called me is to teach the Gospel. As our people are not yet overwhelmed by the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ, I would like to appeal to any God's servants who could offer her/his life of carry along Gospel anywhere over the world without fear to show them those people of Pakam of Rumbek in Southern Sudan in the late 2011 or 2012 as I wish in the God's plan.
